A  CHRISTMAS  STORY

Once there was a man who looked upon Christmas as a lot of humbug.  He wasn't a Scrooge -- he was kind and decent person; he didn't believe all that stuff about God becoming a man which Churches proclaim at Christmas.  And he was too honest to pretend he did.  "I am sorry to distress you," he told his wife, who was a faithful Christian, "but I simply can't understand this claim that God became a man.  It doesn't make sense to me.  I'd feel like a hypocrite if I went to church.  I'd rather stay at home, but you go and I'll wait up for you."

After his family drove away, snow began to fall.  He watched it get heavier and heavier.  "If we must have Christmas," he reflected, "it's nice to have a white one."  He went back to his chair by the fire and began to read.  Before long, he was startled by a thudding sound.  It was followed by another.  He thought someone must be throwing snowballs at his front window. When he went to investigate, he found a flock of birds huddled in the snow.  Caught in the storm, they had tried to fly through his window in a desperate search for shelter.  "I can't let them freeze," he thought. "But what can I do?"  Remembering the barn where the children's pony was stabled, he thought, "That would provide a warm shelter."  He put on his coat and tramped through the snow to the barn.  He opened it and turned on the light.  But the birds didn't come in. "Food will bring them in," he thought.  So he hurriedly got some bread crumbs.  To his dismay, the birds ignored the food.  He tried shooing them, but they scattered in every direction -- except the barn.  "They find me strange and terrifying," he thought, "and I can't think how to get them to trust me... if only I could be a bird for a minute, I could lead them to safety."

At that moment, the Church bells began to ring.  He listened to the bells sounding the glad tidings of Christmas.  Then he sank to his knees in the snow.  "Now I understand," he whispered. "Now I see why You had to do it."

As Christmas approaches, we are reminded of the ultimate sacrifice God made in order that we might come to know Him.   Jesus became one of us in order that He might lead us to the shelter of God's Kingdom. Jesus IS the reason for this season.  Enjoy celebrating the birth of Jesus with family and friends.
